Chapter Twenty – Aiden

“You trust your brother?” Flora’s voice wavered and she clutched onto the seat of the car as the dragon launched himself into the air and hovered above them.

“With my life,” Aiden replied.

And the life of our mate, his bear replied.

The car rocked slightly as Ivan’s dragon closed his huge talons around the car. With a jolt, the car lifted off the ground and began moving along the street like a hovercar. It was surreal for the car to move without the sound of the engine, although Caleb held onto the steering wheel as if he were steering the vehicle.

“I should have let you drive,” Caleb said drily as they narrowly missed the branches of a tree.

With a downward beat of his wings, Ivan strained to lift them higher. A couple more beats and they cleared the roofs of the houses lining the street. Down below them, people looked upward, their faces pale and mouths open as they stared at the dragon carrying a car.

Ivan didn’t take them much higher. Instead, he put his strength and focus on speed, each wing beat speeding their way toward the place where the world of Wishing Moon Bay and the fae intersected. He knew the way.

They all knew the way.

When they were young shifters, they would often run to the gateway between the worlds. They never crossed through, Valerie told them it wasn’t safe since the fae didn’t like shifters. She’d impressed on them how dangerous it was, particularly for Ivan.

“So why don’t you like dragons?” Caleb called over his shoulder.

Flora glanced sideways at Delphine, but she was too busy looking down at the world passing them by to meet her gaze. “Because they don’t like us.”

Caleb half-turned to stare at Flora. “That’s it?”

“Pretty much. It’s an old rivalry that goes back so far that no one knows exactly why.”

“You don’t know why?” Aiden asked.

“No.” Flora swallowed hard, her face pale as the car lurched. “He won’t drop us, will he?”

“No. Ivan knows that if he drops us, Valerie will kill him,” Aiden explained.

“I like your mom.” Flora smoothly changed the subject.

“So do I,” Delphine added. “You’re lucky to have her in your lives.”

“We know.” Aiden glanced at Caleb. “And she means it when she says she’ll do what she can for you and your family. You have friends in Wishing Moon Bay, Delphine.”

“Is that a veiled way to ask us to stay?” Delphine asked. “If we get out of this alive.”

“We’ll get out of it alive,” Aiden reassured her. “And yes, you should stay in town.”

“I’ll talk it over with Mikka. We want to do what is best for Imelda. It’s something we talked about doing when she was older. We wanted her first shift to be in Wishing Moon Bay. Somewhere she would be safe to make mistakes.”

“There!” Flora leaned forward and pointed into the distance. “That’s the edge of your world and the beginning of ours.”

“I can see the air shimmering.” Aiden stared in awe. “It looks different from up here.
